The conductor makes ready as the band raises their instruments. All at once, music floods the air as the performance begins.
Music plays a large role in Marine Corps history, beginning with the establishment of U.S. Marine Band in 1798. On Aug. 21, 1800, the Marine Band presented its first public concert in the District of Columbia, Washington, on a hill overlooking the Potomac River. Music has been incorporated throughout the Corps in cadence, ceremonies, historic battles, and marches.
“The concert gives the band the opportunity to spread patriotism and be that connection between the military and the public,” said trombone instrumentalist, Cpl. Seth E. Almond, a musician with the Quantico Marine Corps Band. “The performance includes selections from military marches to contemporary brass band pieces.”
The concert series, hosted by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and held at The National Museum of the Marine Corps, are cost-free performances by military musicians. The foundation provides the annual concerts featuring bands from all military services -- the Quantico Marine Band being the final performance of the year.
“This is a family friendly event that truly brings people together,” said Amanda Webster, a marketing manager for the foundation. “The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation strives to continuously support and fundraise for the National Museum of the Marine Corps and to preserve the Marine Corps legacy.”
Free admission, parking, and concessions were offered at the event, and museum galleries stayed open until the start of the concert.
Cpl. Patrick D. Bringas, an administrative specialist aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, attended the concert and had nothing but good things to say.
“The performance gave me chills,” Bringas said. “I had no idea the turnout would be so large; people just kept coming and coming!
I really look forward to next year’s performance.”
