Navy Day at St Louis Science Center Marks Start of St Louis Navy Week

ST. LOUIS (Sept. 2, 2019)-- St. Louis Navy Week kicked off during a Navy Day held at the St. Louis Science Center, Sept. 2.
Rear Adm. Louis Tripoli, Command Surgeon, United States Pacific Command, Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2, Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting District St. Louis, and Sailors assigned to the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship from USS St. Louis (LCS 19), represented the Navy in various ways during the event.
Tripoli, a native of Oklahoma City, Okla., was formerly on the faculty for Saint Louis University’s Institute for Biosecurity.
“This is an opportunity for us to show the people of St Louis how much we appreciate their support for the armed services, particularly the Navy,” said Tripoli. “People in St. Louis typically don't get very much interaction with the Navy because it is not a fleet-concentration area. Navy Week is a great opportunity to be able to teach people about the Navy, and at the same time thank them for their support.”
The Manager of College and Career Readiness in the Community Science Department at the Science Center, Aric Wanagat, was very appreciative of the Navy’s presence at the Science Center.
“I think it's great, especially as a kick-off to Navy week,” said Waganat. “This is a way to help the community better understand and kind of see what the Navy has to offer. The mission of the Science Center is to help people discover a passion for science and technology. Having the Navy here today is helping us ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning.”

St. Louis Navy Week is being held Sept. 2-8, in conjunction with the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo.
Navy Week will highlight a variety of programs and Sailors during the week, to include the Navy Week’s senior executive host, Vice Adm. Thomas Moore, Commander of Naval Sea Systems Command, the Blue Angels, Navy Band Great Lakes, U.S. Naval Academy STEM, Navy’s Office of Small Business Programs, and Sailors from Navy Operational Support Center St. Louis.
St. Louis Navy Week is one of 14 Navy Weeks in 2019, focusing a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America’s Navy closer to the people it protects. Each year, the program reaches more than 133 million people -- about half the U.S. population.
