Rear Adm. Tim Weber, the new Navy Medicine West (NMW) commander who took the helm last week, attended the 2019 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) to show support for the region’s scientists as they showcased their research and development during the annual meeting, Aug. 20.
As the NMW commander, Weber, who is also director of the Navy’s Medical Service Corps, has oversight of Navy Medicine’s eight-lab research and development enterprise that spans the globe from Dayton, Ohio to Singapore, and 10 military treatment facilities along the West Coast and Pacific Rim.
“Attending MHSRS today gave me a chance to see the exceptional work being presented by our researchers this week,” said Weber. “I had the opportunity to see posters and presentations on numerous topics ranging from infectious diseases to human performance and global health engagement, which showcased the breadth and depth of the research our scientists are conducting around the world that’s contributing to the health and safety of our Sailors, Marines, and their families.”
Scientists and clinicians alike at the region’s medical research labs and military treatment facilities conduct medical research in support of the Fleet and Fleet Marine Force to ensure warfighters are healthy and mission-ready.
Research throughout the Navy Medicine research and development enterprise is focused on force health protection, human performance, combat casualty care, injury prevention and rehabilitation, environmental health, emerging infectious diseases, behavioral health, epidemiology, and medical modeling, simulation, and operational mission support.
“The most exciting part of the day was the opportunity to meet one on one with our researchers and talk with them about their work,” Weber added. “Whether it was during the poster sessions or between the breakout session, I had the chance to better understand how their work is relevant to the warfighter and how it’s impacting the operational mission. We have an incredible team of scientists throughout Navy Medicine West who are dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges our warfighters face and I’m so proud to be part of this team.
Navy Medicine West (NMW) leads Navy Medicine’s Western Pacific health care system and global research and development enterprise. Throughout the region, NMW provides medical care to nearly 700,000 beneficiaries across 10 naval hospitals, two dental battalions, and 51 branch clinics located throughout the West Coast of the U.S., Asia, and the Pacific. Globally, NMW oversees eight research laboratories that deliver research expertise and high-value, high-impact products to support the readiness of today’s warfighters.
