The Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was recently awarded with the Chief of Engineers Award of Honor for the management of the safety program.
“Safety is paramount in all we do at the district,” said Fort Worth District commander, Kenneth N. Reed. “This award is a testament to the emphasis we place on safety on a daily basis.”
The National Awards Ceremony recognizing the district took place August 1 at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters in Washington, DC.
Key safety statistics for the district include no government or contractor fatalities; while having only two recordable property damage mishaps, seven lost days, two restricted, and four OSHA 1904 recordable civilian injuries in the Fort Worth District in Fiscal Year 2018.
“Over the course of the year we established several safety initiatives which greatly contributed to our overall safety record,” said Benoit Palmer, the District’s safety officer.
Examples of key district initiatives included employee training, industrial hygiene, water safety, a fall protection stand down initiative, and a load handling equipment working group.
Additionally, the district implemented a 360 degree program initiative, consisting of placing a traffic cone at the rear of the vehicle upon parking. Prior to moving the vehicle, the operator has to physically remove the cone, thus providing an opportunity to conduct a 360 degree visual inspection of potential hazards.
“The 360 degree program has been effective in the reduction of vehicle accidents involving backing, said Palmer.
“Fiscal Year 2018 was an extremely successful year for the Worth District's Safety Program. We executed our diverse mission in an exemplary manner, being ever mindful that safety and health must be incorporated in everything we do,” said Reed.
For the next fiscal year Palmer and the district leadership challenged the workforce to pause before acting and think about safety implications. The district commander then challenged the workforce to come up with a theme with PAUSE as the centerpiece. The winning entry for the acronym is "People Actively Using Safety Everyday.”
“Although our safety office was recognized for this award, it is really a district award. It is the people within the district who acted on these initiatives which lead to a successful and safe FY18,” said Palmer.
