Team Kirtland to celebrate Women's Equality Day

Team Kirtland is celebrating Women’s Equality Day Aug. 26. The celebration will be held in the 377th Air Base Wing Presentation Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to all with base access.

In 1973, Congress officially designated Aug. 26 as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution, making it illegal to deny citizens the right to vote based on their gender.

“This event is not just for women,” Affirmative Employment Program Manager Sundra Thomas said. “I think it’s important for men to attend to show these women that they are recognized and seen as equal.”

The theme of the event is “Celebrating Women’s Right to Vote.” There will be various TED talks shown, guest speakers, light refreshments and more.

“This event allows us to put our aspirations forward as women and help us feel considered, valued and equal,” said Cindy Dominguez-Trujillo, Special Assistant to the commander on Diversity and Affirmative Employment. “I think that we’ve made tremendous strides, but women still have a long way to go.”
