Thirty-three warfare tactics instructor (WTI) candidates completed the instructor and tactics course (I/TC), the first stage of WTI qualification at Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center’s (SMWDC) Headquarters onboard Naval Base San Diego August 15.

I/TC candidates learn advanced instructional theory and techniques before proceeding to their warfare area specialty course of instruction (COI) in amphibious warfare (AMW), anti-submarine warfare / surface warfare (ASW/SUW), IAMD, or mine warfare (MIW).

Five of the 33 WTI candidates – Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Easton, Lt. Cmdr. Brandon Moody, Lt. Thomas Campbell, Lt. Brandon Easler, and Lt. Roxanne Sumanga – belong to the inaugural MIW WTI program consisting of a 30-week syllabus. The majority of MIW WTI training will take place in Belgium at the NATO Naval Mine Warfare School.

MIW WTI syllabus includes Aviation and Underwater Mine Countermeasures (AMCM and UMCM) capabilities, planning and execution of AMW and MIW operations, and building proficiency with Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures (EXMCM) and Mine Countermeasures operations.

“I/TC is a great opportunity for WTI students to not only meet and integrate with the different warfare areas, but refine the instructor qualities it takes to be successful in their respective pipelines,” said Lt. Caleb. Bekemeier, SMWDC standardization officer and integrated air-missile defense (IAMD) WTI. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with our group of WTI candidates; they are such a talented group of individuals.”

“This course was a good opportunity for everyone to get into an academic mindset having just returned from the operational Fleet,” said Lt. Cmdr. Chris Rakoski, a prospective ASW/SUW WTI. “It also helped me to have a better understanding of the common effort and mission of the Warfare Tactics Instructor cadre, what it means to be a WTI out in the Fleet, and how we should accomplish it through humility, credibility, and approachability.”

Lt. Erin Bacon, a prospective IAMD WTI from USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) welcomed the opportunity to learn more about SMWDC, WTIs and the WTI cadre.

“Building good working relationships with other prospective WTIs, as well as the qualified WTIs at SMWDC teaching the course, gave me a good introduction to WTI culture,” said Bacon. “Being a part of a mission-oriented cadre of professionals is a benefit to whatever ship or command I end up at next.”

After the candidates complete their warfare area COI they become patch-wearing qualified WTIs they are assigned to a variety of production tours where they bring their expertise to bear by training the fleet, developing tactics and doctrine, and providing operational support to the fleet.

Surface Warfare Officers interested in more information about SMWDC’s four WTI programs should reach out to the WTI Program Managers at SWO_WTI@Navy.mil.

SMWDC is a subordinate command of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and exists to increase the lethality and tactical proficiency of the Surface Force across all domains. SMWDC headquarters is at Naval Base San Diego with four divisions in Virginia and California focused on ASW/SUW, MIW, AMW, and IAMD.
