GNIEZNO, Poland (August 15, 2019) – U.S. Troops assigned to Poland celebrated Polish Armed Forces Day with Polish citizens and soldiers. Polish Armed Forces Day is an annual holiday held on Aug. 15, commemorating the anniversary of the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia at the Battle of Warsaw during the Polish–Soviet War.

This year U.S. Soldiers from 178th Human Resource Company and the 407th Civil Affairs Battalion showed their support to the Polish troops by setting up a static display in the city of Gniezno, Poland.

The event not only included American Soldiers and their static display, but many other festivities were available to the participants. There was traditional Polish food; a miniature obstacle course where visitors could get a little taste of the training soldiers go through; weapon ranges consisting of pellet rifles and archery; and people could be seen dressed up as Polish service members from various eras of history.

“It’s really good to be a part of an event like this”, said U.S. Army Pfc. Hope Heritage Viggiann, a Soldier from 178th HR Company. “It’s nice to be able to interact with both the older and younger generations showing them that U.S. Soldiers here in Poland are here to support them.”

U.S. Soldiers have participated in numerous Polish festivals and activities throughout the year, such as Freedom Festival, Powidz Days, and local engagements to learn aspects of Polish culture. These engagements aim to inform and educate the local population of the U.S. Army and Soldiers.

“This is my first time working with the U.S. Army,” said Radek Tokarek, a Polish Army veteran and Territorial Defence Force soldier. “America’s presence at the event today is good because we can show the public that America is our friend and that we are fighting on the same team.”

In recent history, the U.S. and Poland’s relationship has proven to be stronger than ever. As of now, the United States has about 4,500 U.S. Soldiers routinely rotate in and out of Poland. Recently, an article released by Fox News stated that the U.S. will station 1,000 additional troops and a squadron of reaper drones in Poland to help strengthen Poland’s national defense from potential adversaries.
