EASTON, Md. – Governor Larry Hogan and First Lady Yumi Hogan met with officials of the Maryland National Guard and elected leaders during a visit to the recently opened Easton Readiness Center Aug. 14 in Talbot County.
The new 37,000 square foot facility replaces a legacy building constructed in 1976 that was originally built for a single, all male unit.
“As the global and domestic defense missions continue to evolve, our Maryland National Guard men and women will face new challenges,” said Governor Hogan. “Our administration remains committed to ensuring our military receives the necessary resources to support us here at home and while serving abroad.”
The original building provided less than 50 percent of the space needed to support the units assigned there today.
“This magnificent structure is worthy of the men and women of the Maryland Army National Guard,” said Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh, adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard. “In addition to enhancing the training these Soldiers will now receive, the facility gives a boost to their morale and is also a recruiting incentive.”
This structure, which took 24 months to build is the first MDNG building to incorporate the Maryland Public Art program into construction. It features a two story, commissioned mural in the main lobby. The building is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certified. It was built by Harkins Brothers, a Maryland firm.
The facility costs nearly $18 million of which $15 million was provided by federal military construction funds. It now houses two units; D Company, 1-175th Infantry and an element of the 729th Composite Supply Company. Both units contain a significant number of positions open to females and there are opportunities for diverse skillsets. Additionally, the new building contains space for the Eastern Region Honor Guard.
The building contains unit administrative offices, equipment storage areas, locker rooms, toilet/shower facilities, classrooms, soldier training areas, an assembly hall, maintenance facilities and other support spaces constructed to the current, modern Readiness Center standards.
