Service members Compete for Title of Best Medic on Kandahar Airfield

    KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, AFGHANISTAN

    Story by Maj. Thomas Cieslak

3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division

American service members deployed in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and Operation Resolute Support in southern Afghanistan recently pitted their medical skills against each other to earn the title “Best Medic.”

Service members assigned to Train Advise Assist Command – South conducted the organization’s “Best Medic” competition Thursday, August 8th, 2019 on Kandahar Airfield to demonstrate their physical endurance, mental agility and medical skills during a morning of friendly competition.

The morning started with each competitor conducting the Army Combat Fitness Test before moving on to a timed ruckmarch. Their tactical prowess was measured by a stress-shoot event, requiring them to conduct a series of physical exercises before engaging targets on a range.

The competitor’s medical skills were tested in a final event requiring them to administer emergency care to a simulated casualty with multiple wounds and complications.

Though only one competitor was named the TAAC-S “Best Medic” the days’ events built camaraderie among medical personnel assigned to Kandahar Airfield and enabled them to share best practices in emergency and trauma care.
