DANNELLY FIELD, Ala. (August 7, 2019) — Lt. Col. Thomas Abell replaced Col. Tommy James as the commander of the 187th Mission Support Group during a ceremony August 3, 2019, here. Col. Edward Casey, 187th Fighter Wing commander, presided over the ceremony.
In 2014, Abell decided to join the Alabama Air National Guard’s 187th Fighter Wing, taking a position in the 187 FW’s Inspector General office. He later became the Deputy Commander of the 187th Mission Support Group, where he served over three years, which lead him to his new position as the 187th MSG Commander.
“Becoming a group commander was something I aspired to be, but I wouldn’t say I ever thought ‘I want to go do that,” the new 187th MSG commander explained. “My outlook has been to do the best you can at the job you’re doing, and if you do a good job, you leave the door open for when the opportunity comes along.”
With the opportunity to now lead the group, Abell discussed the importance of the 187th MSG to the unit.
“I believe that the Mission Support Group is the backbone of the wing,” Abell said. “What we do, and what every airman does here, is critical in enabling the overall mission of the wing. If we didn't do what we do, everything else would stop.
“As a group, ‘We Deliver First’ is our motto that we stand by, and I firmly believe thats true,” he continued. “Wherever we go, whatever we do, we set the stage across the spectrum.”
