Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Europe Africa Southwest Asia (EURAFSWA) held a change of command ceremony at Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, on July 31.
Capt. Jeffrey J. Kilian relieved Capt. Maria L. Aguayo as commanding officer, NAVFAC EURAFSWA.
Rear Adm. Darius Banaji, commander, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic welcomed the change of command guests. In his comments, Banaji commended Aguayo for her leadership, dedication to the mission, and accomplishments during her command tenure, and welcomed Capt. Kilian and his family to the region.
“We hand select commanding officers very carefully,” Banaji said. “It demonstrates an incredible level of trust and confidence in an officer. These two officers emulate the judgment, character and courage required to command and defend our nation.”
In her remarks, Aguayo thanked her NAVFAC military, civilian and local national workforce, noting, “There is no question that as a team consisting of our units of action, our public works departments, and our FEC Core support here in Naples, we support an area of responsibility that continues to grow in size, in an environment more complex and volatile than any we’ve experienced in recent memory.” She added, “The extremely dynamic nature of our area of operations made every single day exciting and rewarding. I asked a lot from you and you delivered every single time.”
Previously, Kilian served as the Executive Officer for NAVFAC’s Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center, in Port Hueneme, Calif. With a Navy career spanning 25 years, Kilian is a registered professional engineer in the state of California, member of the Defense Acquisition Corps, Certified Energy Manager, Seabee Combat Warfare Officer, and Fleet Marine Force Officer.
Addressing attendees about assuming command of NAVFAC EURAFSWA, Kilian remarked, “I’m looking forward to fully integrating into region planning and operations.” He noted that in moving forward, it’s critical to maintain the region’s hard-earned momentum, and remain vigilant.
He added, “We must continue to challenge ourselves to demonstrate the highest level of performance through exemplary character, preparedness, disciplined execution, and superior performance in support of the warfighter. Together we will accomplish amazing feats and realize success at every level.”
NAVFAC EURAFSWA executes approximately $750 million per year in construction, professional engineering and facilities services for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and NATO commands in countries throughout Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia where the Navy is the DoD lead agent for military construction.
