The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District has awarded a $2.122 million contract to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Maumee Bay, and a $787,000 contract for the Maumee River dredging to occur during 2019, located along Lake Erie in Toledo Harbor, in the City of Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio.

Each contract was awarded to Luedtke Engineering Co., based in Frankfort, Michigan.

“Buffalo District is proud to execute these contract awards to ensure the continuation of safe transport in Toledo Harbor,” said Lt. Col. Jason Toth, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District commander. “We are grateful for the advocacy of Congressman Kaptur, as well as other state and local partners, who have worked hard to secure funding for these efforts.”

The Maumee Bay contract was awarded on April 30, 2019 with dredging anticipated to commence during August 2019. Maumee Bay dredging will take place from the Maumee River mouth, extending out into the Maumee Bay navigation channel, and will result in the removal of approximately 500,000 cubic yards of material.

The Maumee River contract was awarded on July 1, 2019 with dredging anticipated to commence during October 2019. The contractor will perform dredging in the lower end of the river, near the river mouth and will dredge approximately 150,000 cubic yards of material.

Toledo Harbor is a deep draft commercial harbor that shipped and received 9.4 million tons of material in 2017, through its interconnectivity with 37 commercial ports. It generates approximately $375M in business revenue annually, and supports 7,083 direct, indirect, and induced jobs that produce over $513.2M per year in personal income for transportation-related industries.
