Sailors assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton continue the phase one portion of the Navy’s Drug Education For Youth (DEFY) summer camp at Naval Hospital Education Center aboard Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Silverdale, Wash., July 30, 2019.

DEFY is a year-long mentorship program for 9-12 year olds geared towards keeping children drug free, teaching them various life skills, helping them develop successful positive thinking, and giving them the confidence to combat peer pressure.

“It is important to teach kids participating the potential negative effects of peer pressure,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Cody Moorhead. “Military kids are constantly moving and wanting to fit in with their new peer groups when their families change duty stations. DEFY is giving them the knowledge, tools and confidence to find new friend groups that will positively influence them rather than pressuring them into using harmful substances to fit in.”

During this phase, the youth will be taught a full classroom curriculum focused on abstaining from drugs coupled with physical challenges throughout the day.

“To make the days more fun and to hopefully help the kids retain the lessons, we incorporate physical activities into the learning,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Joey Chavez. “These challenges are included to promote team work and to enhance comradery during the summer camp.”

Phase one will continue for two weeks. Phase two of the mentoring program will continue throughout the school year. DEFY youths will be paired up with a mentor and will meet up monthly to reinforce the skills they've learned in the phase one camp.

NHB supports more than 60,000 military families in West Puget Sound, shaping military medicine through training, mentoring and research to ensure a ready medical force and operationally ready force.
