A burial service is set for a U.S. Army soldier who died during World War II. His remains were unidentified for 75 years.

Army Cpl. Ralph L. Bennett, 22, a native of Ames, Iowa, will be buried with full military honors on Saturday, in his hometown.

Bennett was a member of Headquarters Company, 296th Combat Engineer Battalion when he was killed in action on June 13, 1944 fighting Japanese forces in Burma.

From the time of his death until July 16, 2018, his unidentified remains were interred in several temporary cemeteries in Burma and India and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu. Cpl. Bennet was positively identified on April 29, 2019.

To identify Bennett’s remains, scientists from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally, the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis.
