July 20, 2019 GREAT LAKES (NNS) – During the July drill weekend, Sailors assigned to Navy Operational Support Center Chicago were afforded the opportunity to bring their family members to the NOSC to learn more about the Navy and what it has to offer military families.

Representatives from the Lake County State Police, Glenview Navy League, the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, Navy recruiting, the Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County, the Unites Service Organization and the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars were on hand to answer questions, give advice and help Navy family members understand just what is available to them.

Chief Petty Officer Ryan Halili, a member of the NOSC Full-time support team said, “Our command master chief came to the chiefs’ mess and asked what we can do for the families. This is what we, the collective chiefs and unit leaders came up with.”

Command Master Chief Mark Marzella welcomed the families during a sailor of the quarter presentation ceremony. “I’d like to do something like this a couple times a year, ” Marzella commented. “Welcome to the families. Please enjoy yourselves while you are here.”

Along with gaining knowledge from the represented organizations, family members were invited to a cook out with burgers, hot dogs, beans and chips. Children were able to play in a “bouncy house” and the older family members took their turn on a mechanical bull game; both sponsored by the local USO.

As an advocate for military families, Mrs. Emily Schrader, the Ombudsman for NOSC Chicago, found herself enjoying the festivities. “It’s super exciting to see the turn out for this even,” she exclaimed. “We are going to do more of these in the future.”

“We haven’t held an event like this in more than ten years,” commented Halili. “This isn’t just for the Sailors here today. Master Chief Marzella asked us to find a way to support the families of our Sailors who are deployed around the world.”
