FORT DRUM, N.Y. (July 22. 2019) -- Summer may still be sizzling, but the Fort Drum Public Works staff is already preparing for winter. The first order of business is boosting its snow removal crew with seasonal employees.

People interested in joining this team can attend a career fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 31 at The WorkPlace in Watertown.

Applicants should bring resumes, professional references and copies of certifications and licenses, and be prepared for interviews from members of Public Works and the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center.

There are more than 60 seasonal job opportunities available on the Roads and Grounds crew, to include engineer equipment operator, heavy mobile equipment repairer and supervisor, and motor vehicle operator. Duties include snow removal, equipment maintenance and inventories, storm damage clearing, and removing ice and snow from fire hydrants, signage, sidewalks and railroad switches.

“There will be some on-the-job training, but the applicant’s resume must exhibit the ability to already perform on some equipment,” said Marisa Mustizer, Public Works organizational analyst.

The engineer equipment operator positions require a commercial driver’s license, but those applying for motor vehicle operators need only a valid state driver’s license.

Mustizer said that this is not an unusually high number of vacancies for seasonal employees – slightly higher than last year – but it is the first time that Public Works is hosting a job fair off post.

“Currently, the Army has been given direct hire authority for some positions to allow for an easier hiring process,” she said. “These positions fit the criteria authorized.”

Mustizer said that those who are hired will fill permanent seasonal positions, meaning that they do not have to re-apply for the next winter season. Some employees may have the opportunity to remain with the Roads and Ground crew for the summer seasonal workforce.

“That will vary from year to year based on the number of summer season employees authorized, the number of summer seasonal employees who want to stay on board, seniority, performance and other criteria,” she said. “It’s not a guarantee, but there is potential. In the current year, we did not have to recruit outside for any summer seasonal employees.”

Fort Drum Public Works posts job opportunities regularly through The WorkPlace, located at 1000 Coffeen Street in Watertown. For more information visit www.facebook.com/JeffLewisWorkPlace.
