    Eighth Army employee honored with DOD Workforce Recruitment Program Award

    An Eighth Army employee was recognized during a Department of Defense Workforce Recruitment Program Awards Ceremony at the Hilton Mark Center in Arlington, Virginia, July 18.

    Rafael J. Reyes, the Equal Employment Opportunity manager with Eighth Army at Camp Humphreys, Republic of Korea, earned the Army’s Outstanding WRP Coordinator of the Year Award.

    “I was honored to be recognized for my work with the WRP and to represent Eighth Army in receiving this award,” Reyes said. “My success would not have been possible without the support of my leadership and the whole Eighth Army team. The success of this program in an overseas environment is definitely a team effort.”

    For more than 20 years, the WRP has been advancing employment opportunities for college students and recent graduates with disabilities. The WRP is a federal recruitment and referral program that connects federal employers nationwide and around the globe with college students and recent graduates with disabilities for summer internships and permanent jobs. The Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity manages the DOD’s participation in the WRP.

    The WRP serves as a vital pipeline of talent to help build a diverse, inclusive and mission ready workforce in the federal government. The WRP participants serve nationwide and around the globe, including Europe and in South Korea were Reyes first introduced WRP in 2008.

    “We are proud of Mr. Reyes, who serve as a WRP ambassador for the past 14 years,” said Renier L. Torres, director of the U.S. Army Pacific EEO Office. “He serve as role model for others and his contributions are key to our efforts of diversity and inclusion making Eighth Army a model equal opportunity employer of choice.”

    “It is always rewarding to see WRP students transition to permanent employment in the federal workforce and knowing I helped play a role in it,” Reyes said.

    Since 2009, the Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity staff have presented the Judith C. Gilliom WRP awards to participants who exemplify the professional attributes promoted by the WRP and make an impact on their agency or component during their tenure, The awards honor the legacy and advocacy of Gilliom, who served as the DOD disability program manager for 25 years and was one of the founders of the WRP.
