HONOLULU — Lt. Cmdr. Leo Danaher relieved Lt. Cmdr. Mathew Doyle as commanding officer of the Maritime Safety and Security Team Honolulu in a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Base Honolulu, Friday.

Capt. Laura Collins, Pacific Area operations chief, presided over the event.

Danaher is arriving from the Coast Guard 8th District in New Orleans where he served as the command center chief. Raised in a military family, he graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management.

His prior tours include deck watch and law enforcement officer on Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WHEC 724), counter-drug officer for the Coast Guard 11th District in Alameda, California, operations officer of Maritime Safety and Security Team Los Angeles/Long Beach, California, civil support action officer at U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and executive officer of Station New York.

Doyle is departing to take over as the Coast Guard 14th District as chief of external affairs.

Before his command of MSST Honolulu, Doyle served as the operations officer for MSST New York and command duty officer and search and rescue controller at the Coast Guard’s Pacific Area and Coast Guard 11th District command center in Alameda, California. He was also the assistant incident management division chief and vessel boarding and search team supervisor any Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound, Washington.

Doyle is a 2005 Officer Candidate School graduate. Prior enlisted tours include Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard in Washington, D.C., Health Services Technician School in Petaluma, California, Air Station Cape Cod, Connecticut, and Coast Guard Cutter Alder (WLB 215) in Duluth, Minnesota.

Doyle holds an Associate of Arts degree in general studies and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in business administration. He is currently working toward completing a master’s degree in homeland security with a focus on transportation safety.

MSSTs originated under the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 in direct response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and they are part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's layered strategy directed at protecting seaports and waterways. MSSTs provide waterborne and a modest level of shore-side counter-terrorism force protection for strategic shipping, high-interest vessels, and critical infrastructure.
