Iowa Army National Guard Provides Opportunity
    By Spc. Zachary M. Zippe

CAMP RIPLEY, Minn., July 16, 2019 - The National Guard provides many opportunities for young people who want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. The Iowa Army National Guard (IANG) can even provide Soldiers with civilian career opportunities. Soldiers like Pfc. Austin Roemeling from Boyden, Iowa, a wheeled vehicle mechanic with Company F, 334th Brigade Support Battalion (BSB), IANG, can jump start their careers both in the military and on the civilian side. Roemeling is just getting started with his career, but the IANG is already providing the groundwork he needs to build his future.

Roemeling graduated advanced individual training (AIT) in early 2019, returned home and started drilling in Red Oak, Iowa, with his new unit. Basic training taught him discipline and AIT taught him the skills he needs in the Guard and his civilian career.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mechanic,” said Roemeling. “I decided after high school that I wanted to be a diesel mechanic. I had an opportunity to meet with a recruiter who told me I could get a job like this in the Guard. Now, I’m going to school to become a diesel mechanic, and the Guard is going to pay for it.”

The IANG provides Roemeling with opportunities to learn new skills, go to school and serve his country. He enjoys being able to have a core group of people and a camaraderie he can always count on. “I enjoy being in the Guard because there’s a lot of good people that you meet,” said Roemeling. “There’s a lot of people you make friends and relationships with that can help you through life.”

Different Soldiers serve for many reasons, but they all have one thing in common; an opportunity to better themselves personally and professionally. Roemeling is one of the many young Soldiers well on their way to making a great career in the Iowa Army National Guard.
