NEWPORT R.I. - NHCNE Hospital Corpsman Third Class (HM3) Kassandra Betancourt was the honored recipient of two prestigious awards recently.
On June 21, R.I. Military Women Across the Nation (MWAN) Unit #118 celebrated her selection as the R.I. Active Duty Military Woman of the Year.
She subsequently received the NAVSTA Newport, R.I., 2018 Bluejacket of the Year award sponsored by the Navy League of Newport County and Kiwanis Club of Newport on June 28.
A native of Riverside, Calif., HM3 Betancourt enlisted in the Navy in January 2017.
She was nominated as NHCNE Blue Jacket of the Quarter and Blue Jacket of the Year for her outstanding attitude and moral character exuding the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.
HM3 Betancourt was selected as NAVSTA Newport’s Bluejacket of the Year.
Additionally she was meritoriously promoted to Hospital Corpsman Third Class in April 2019.
HM3 Betancourt’s clinical skills are unparalleled, serving as the Inventory Representative for the Immunization Department, conducting weekly inventories on $157K worth of supplies and vaccines and ensuring proper disposal of biohazard storage containers.
Her knowledge of the immunization clinic made her invaluable in the creation of 37 standing orders contributing to increased efficiency in the department.
As a strong leader amongst her peers, she volunteered for the command leadership positions of President for the Diversity Committee, Public Affairs Officer of the Corpsman Ball Committee and is a key contributor for the command’s Combined Federal Campaign.
She was also involved with local community outreach programs such as beach clean ups, creating a STEM curriculum for local schools, Wreaths Across America, Save the Bay and Pride Ride 2018.
“HM3 Betancourt is constantly striving for process improvement and going the extra mile for the command and the community. She seeks out the most difficult tasks to undertake, and then performs them at a level that is high above her pay grade” said Captain Marnie Buchanan, NHCNE Commanding Officer.
“She is most deserving of the numerous citations presented at the two luncheons in her honor.” Additional noteworthy recognition at the ceremonies was presented on behalf of R.I. Governor Gina Raimondo, R.I. U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, U.S. Representative for R.I. James Langevin, U.S. Representative from the 41st District of Calif. Mark Takano, R.I. Senate District 13 Senator Dawn Euer, Newport Mayor Jamie Bova, and the town councils of Middletown and Portsmouth R.I.
NHCNE wishes HM3 Kassandra Betancourt Fair Winds and Following Seas as she departs the command for Naval Branch Health Clinic Bahrain where she will continue to set the example for others to emulate.
