QUANTICO, Va. -- The NFL is a multimillion-dollar company that has thousands of moving parts, one of which is a quarterback who wants to give back to the children of service members, who may not see their parents for long stretches of time due to deployments and exercises.
Quarterback Trace McSorley, a rookie drafted from Penn State by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 NFL Draft, came to Butler Stadium as a guest coach with ProCamps Worldwide, a mobile football camp, hosted by the Quantico Commissary. The camp was open to Department of Defense children, grades one through eight.
“We are out here on the Base of Quantico running a camp for the young kids and having some fun,” said McSorley. “It's good to come on to a military base because the military does a lot for our country, so I think it's a good opportunity to give back to the community.”
McSorley went to various stations around the stadium to personally interact with the young athletes while other volunteer coaches, who are veterans, ran drills with the children to make sure the kids were having fun and being safe.
Rey, a retired anti-terrorism Marine with Headquaters Marine Corps, told us why he felt it was necessary to have his son, Keali’i, to come to the camp.
“Keali’i has a learning disability that makes him less social around others and getting him out here promotes the socialness he needs,” said Rey.
Keali’i, age 6, said, “I’m having fun, I love being with my friends.”
Matt, an Army officer, took the opportunity to shoot some photos of his son, Ty, participating in the drills. Matt regularly goes on deployments and this camp is one of the few chances that the two get to see each other.
“My family stays here and I go,” said Matt. “Ty has adapted to the lifestyle and we connect through sports; it’s his passion and my passion, as well, and we both find common ground in it.”
The parents were happy to see their children out on the field having a good time, and the kids couldn't agree more, especially with an NFL quarterback on the field.
“I play football and I’m happy I can be at this,” exclaimed Ty, age 10. “It is really cool to see an NFL quarterback play football with me!”
Colonel William Bentley III, commanding officer of Marine Corps Base Quantico and a guest coach, told us why having these events is beneficial to the kids. He also wanted to thank the people who worked to have this camp here at the base.
“We have a lot of great things going on for the kids.” Bentley said. “We want to say thanks to the exchange and commissary for having the camp, our sponsor Procter & Gamble, and thank you to football ProCamps Worldwide for putting this on. Trace McSorley you've been outstanding and we appreciate you coming out and thanks for being here.”
Bentley hopes the ProCamps Worldwide comes back to Quantico next year.
The combined efforts of McSorley, veteran volunteers, and the families, provided two fun-filled days for children whose military lifestyle requires them to sacrifice so much.
