Maybe you have seen him at the gym or running under the evening sky around Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. At first glance, one would see a Soldier dedicated to his health, but what most don’t know is more than six months ago he weighed 246 pounds.
Staff Sgt. Mitchon Neth, a Hawaii Army National Guard Soldier currently deployed to Kosovo supporting a peace support operation, was informed he would be deployed late last year
As a Citizen-Soldier, remaining in compliance with the Army height and weight standard ensures Soldiers are fit to deploy. Neth is no stranger to deployment and upon notification he started his weight loss endeavor to deploy with his fellow Soldiers.
Born in Pohnpei, Neth was motivated at an early age to join the U.S. Army.
“The U.S. military have a strong and positive presence,” said Neth. “What they do for my island state and countrymen is admirable. I was easily recruited to enlist because I wanted to be a part of that.”
In 2005, Neth enlisted into the U.S. Army. During his 14 years of service, he deployed three times and will soon complete his fourth deployment.
“Training one weekend a month and two weeks during the summer prepares National Guard Soldiers for what’s to come, but being deployed requires everyone to be mission ready – mentally and physically at any given moment,” said Neth.
Neth was able to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test, but needed to make a few changes to meet the Army height and weight standard.
“Losing weight was not a decision that I needed to make, it is the expectation,” said Neth. Being away from my family and civilian life gave me more time to go to the gym or go for a run.
Neth’s weight loss of nearly 50 pounds during six months was impacted by his motivation to deploy and understanding of his body.
“You know your body better than anyone out there,” said Neth. “One person’s routine is not a one-size-fits-all formula.”
Neth stresses the key to his success is consistency, commitment to your health and physical well-being, managing your expectations, and taking action every day.
Now weighing around 185 pounds, Neth continues to improve his physical wellness by regular exercises and a well-balanced diet.
