SANTA RITA, GUAM— Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Adams relieved Lt. Cmdr. Christian Adams as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sequoia (WLB 215) commanding officer during a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Sector Guam, Wednesday.
Rear Adm. Kevin Lunday, commander, Coast Guard 14th District presided over the event.
The change of command is a time-honored tradition aboard ships and shore commands. It represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority, and accountability from one individual to another. The core of the event is the formal passing of command in the presence of the entire crew, leaving no doubt as to who has assumed the mantle of authority.
Roanoke, Virginia, native Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Adams most recently served in the Budget Execution Office of the deputy commandant for mission support.
His previous afloat assignments include deck watch officer on Coast Guard Cutter Campbell (WMEC 909), homeported in Kittery, Maine, and duties as executive officer on Coast Guard Cutter Washington (WPB 1331) and Sequoia, both homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam. Ashore, he completed a staff assignment in Juneau, Alaska, at the Coast Guard 17th District enforcement branch.
Lt. Cmdr. Ryan Adams is a 2005 Coast Guard Academy graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in government. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Oklahoma State University and is a certified government financial manager.
Before commanding Sequoia, Lt. Cmdr. Christian Adams served as the assistant school chief of the National Aids to Navigation School in Yorktown, Virginia. He will now serve at the Coast Guard Navigation Center.
His prior afloat tours include as executive officer of Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay (WTGB 102) homeported in Detroit, operations officer on Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast (WMEC 623) homeported in Warrenton, Oregon, and deck watch officer on Coast Guard Cutter Alder (WLB 216) homeported in Duluth, Minnesota. He also served as a civil engineering officer at facilities engineering for Sector New York in Staten Island.
Lt. Cmdr. Christian Adams is a 2004 Coast Guard Academy graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. In 2015, he graduated summa cum laude from Boise State University, College of Engineering, with a Master of Science degree in organizational performance and workplace learning.
Sequoia is a 225-foot sea-going buoy tender and the 15th of 16 cutters built. Sequoia launched at the Marinette Marine Corporation Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, Aug. 23, 2003. The Coast Guard took delivery of Sequoia on April 21, 2004. The commissioning crew then began their over 13,000-mile trip back to their homeport of Apra Harbor.
