People of all ages and cultural backgrounds came together to experience the festivities of the Freedom Festival in Warsaw, Poland, July 6, 2019. Freedom Festival is an annual event hosted by the U.S. Embassy meant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Polish-American relations, the 30th year anniversary of the parliamentary elections of 1989 and the Independence Day of the United States.
The unique event included many attractions that were inviting to everyone. Live Polish and American music filled the air as the scent of delicious BBQ attracted visitors far and wide. Sports fans could participate in baseball and football themed activities, and if they were up to the challenge they were able to ride a mechanical bull.
Helping share the culture and celebrate the Independence Day of the United States, both the United States Army and Marines had booths set up at the event. The U.S. Army interacted with the public by posing for photos, allowing the public to try on military equipment and answer any question they may have. The Marines offered a pull up challenge, and anyone strong enough to do over 23 pull-ups would be rewarded with a t-shirt.
“The U.S. Army’s involvement in today’s event [was] vital,” said Bix Aliu, Deputy Chief of mission at the U.S. embassy to Poland in Warsaw. “People can see that our dedicated warriors of freedom are here to support the independence and freedom of Poland along with teach the Polish people about the United States”.
The event not only celebrates the past, but helps better prepare us for the future by strengthening our relationship with the country of Poland.
“The more that we can share our values, the more we can communicate and learn from our experiences” said Aliu. “We have a strong traditional relationship that is rooted in the desire for freedom and democracy, and we will stand by each other in the future even more so than we have before”.
