With a mountain range in the distance and vineyards just off the road, driving in Aviano can be a beautiful experience. But the beauty of the road is nothing compared to the beauty of arriving safely at your destination.
“The safety of our Airmen, Civilians, contractors, and their families is our number one priority,” said Master Sgt. Victorio Gutierrez, 31st Fighter Wing Safety superintendent. “Each and every Wyvern life is valuable and should be treated as such. Make it home safely…with honor.”
Checking a notification on a phone may not seem like a big deal, but distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. Whether the distraction is a phone, burger, or passenger, nothing is more important than making it to the destination safely - everything else can wait.
Driving based off of the weather conditions can improve safety as well. May was one of the rainiest months this year which impacted the road conditions. When raining, the roads can become slick leading to vehicles hydroplaning. It is important to slow your speed in these conditions.
It is okay to drive slowly, said Erica Furlan the 31st FW Safety traffic coordinator. It is more important to get to your destination than to get there quickly.
As well as taking your time to drive slowly, increasing following distance can decrease the odds of accident due to sliding or reduced visibility. Driving within the tracks of the car ahead of you can also allow for the car in front to displace the water on the road.
Vehicle maintenance should be a priority for drivers as well. After driving on the same tires for some time, common wear will deteriorate the tread on the tires. If not replaced, this can increase the odds of loss of traction, resulting in possible accidents.
A common way to check the tread on tires is to stick a penny in the tread. If Lincoln’s head is partially covered, there is enough tread remaining. But if Lincoln’s head is not covered at all, it is time to change the tires.
Properly cared for brakes are just as important as the tires. If stopping the car is shaky, slow or has a squeal, it may be time to change your brakes. Neglected brakes can lead to accidents in otherwise preventable conditions.
“Maintain your car, brakes, and tires,” said Furlan. “I cannot stress it enough.”

Many accidents are avoidable when the driver is prepared and alert.
