    210th and 203rd REDHORSE build a K-Span building

    CAMP PENDELTON, VA, UNITED STATES

    06.21.2019

Story by Master Sgt. Paula Aragon

    150th Special Operations Wing

CAMP PENDELTON SMR, VIRGINIA - Members of the 210th and 203rd REDHORSE teams along with a small contingency of support members, arrived at Camp Pendelton SMR, Virginia, on June 16, 2019, to train on site and to help finish a K-Span building and part of the interior.
These members are learning how to build and erect a K-Span building. The first day of this class was instruction based and an explanation of how the system works. There was also a safety briefing and instructions for the machinery that will be used.
The instructor, Rick Lindvig with MIC Industries, gave the class the do’s and don’ts of the machinery they will be operating. The UMB machine is unique with how it turns out the flat sheet metal into a formed panel. Think of it as a gutter making machine on steroids.
With Rick’s guidance it was time to start to make the panels. The goal was to finish the structure by Friday. In good REDHORSE fashion, these team members finished it in two days. Once the panel has been formed, it is time for the team to carry the panel to a designated location. This is no easy task as each panel weighs 750 pounds. The choreographed walk to the location must be done in unison or it could cause an issue and possibly hurt some people.
The process is done in threes, as it takes three panels to make one unit called a pick. Once it is fully assembled it will be lifted into place with the crane and guided by ropes so that it does not swing abruptly. After it has been set in place, this is when the team comes together to attach the pick to the building that has been started. There are three members on the top of the existing structure who will clamp down the panel and this process will continue until they reach the bottom. Once in place the skilled welders will tack weld the panel on to the angle iron.
The members will then get the crimping machine and adjoin the free-floating panel to the stable structure. Both ends of this K-Span will then have side panels installed, enclosing the structure. They will also add entry ways on either end making it accessible for larger pieces of equipment or a single door entry for people to walk through.
After all this has been accomplished, it will be time to lay the floor. This will be a concrete slab. There will be other finishing touches that will be added, such as; electrical outlets, computer ports, HVAC and lighting to name a few.
The accomplishments of the 210th and 203rd REDHORSE team members are profound. They work together and show what teamwork is all about. They came to do a job and have brought the project ahead of schedule proving that once they are given a task, they will accomplish it in a safe and record time frame.
