Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit One (EODMU1) conducted a change of command ceremony today on Naval Base Point Loma.
During the ceremony, Cmdr. Brian Reitter relieved Cmdr. Jeremy Wheat as the commanding officer of EODMU1.
Wheat thanked his wife and children for their continued sacrifices in supporting his career and his extended family and friends as well for providing a network of support. He also thanked his team at EODMU1, including the ombudsman, command master chief and executive officer. “We started our conversation in April of 2017 when I assumed command and more so than any other command I have been a part of you have continued to be engaged in the conversation of leadership that has enabled me to meet my commander’s intent every day since,” said Wheat. “Your toughness, commitment to the EOD ethos, warrior accountability, and mature leadership have continued the legacy of this command and transformed the identity of EODMU1. I am proud to have been part of your team.”
Wheat will soon report to the Federal Executive Fellowship program at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
Reitter, from Florham Park, New Jersey, previously served as the director of exercise plans and operations design/analysis at Surface Mine Warfighting Development Center in San Diego. During the ceremony, he said, “Thank you for the warm welcome and continued professionalism. I am so humbled and honored to serve as part of the EODMU1 family.”
Capt. Oscar Rojas, commodore, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group One, provided the keynote remarks. He said, “The security environment has shifted dramatically in the past decade, and our Navy EOD force has grown and expanded to account for these winds of change. EODMU1 has played a critical role in this evolution and expansion, through the evolution of expeditionary mine countermeasures units of action and man-machine teaming.”
Rojas also discussed the important role of the Sailors, Marines and civilians who are assigned to the mobile unit. He said, “Over the last two years under Cmdr. Jeremy Wheat’s leadership, you have been the combat-ready force that deters wars and protects the security of our great nation. As we move forward under Cmdr. Brian Reitter’s leadership, you need to continue being ready to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations at sea and from the sea. Everything EODMU1 does is designed to be ready for war today and in the future.”
EODMU1 provides operational EOD capability to include locating, identifying, rendering safe, exploiting, recovering, and disposal of all explosive ordnance including chemical and nuclear weapons.
