The 48th Component Maintenance Squadron Electrical and Environmental shop developed field level procedures to restore throttle grips on F-15 Eagles’ here, saving the 48th Fighter Wing 110 maintenance man hours and more than $26,000.
In November 2018, E&E Airmen noticed a backlog of throttle grip target designation switch repairs. The TDC switch, a vital component to basic fighter maneuvers, allows pilots to designate targets on their radar display.
The backlog would delay and strain fighter operations, and not wanting to contribute to continued aircraft cannibalization, the Airmen became proactive and found a solution to repair the TDC switch.
“We took the throttle grip and came up with a new way to take apart, repair, reassemble, bench check, and return it to service for an operational check all within 10 days of receiving the request,” said Tech. Sgt. Aaron Suter, 48th CMS E&E shop noncommissioned officer in-charge.
This achievement contributed to the 48th Fighter Wing 2018 Innovation Madness win at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Africa Command level for which the wing was highlighted for saving a total of $11 million and 1.4 million man-hours across two innovations.
“We need our squadrons to be aggressively persistent and take risks in the pursuit of new ideas and solutions,” said Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein.
Innovating in itself speeds warfighting capabilities and improves the overall mission not only for the 48th Fighter Wing but for the Air Force as well.
