PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) – Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3 provided civil engineering support equipment (CESE) during a “Touch-a-Truck” event at the Thousand Oaks Community Center in Thousand Oaks, California, June 15.
On display were two MK28 cargo trucks, a heavy grader, and a high-mobility multipurpose- wheeled vehicle alongside static displays from local first responders, utility companies and construction companies.
The “Touch-a-Truck” community relations event exposed the public to the missions and capabilities of the Seabees and the Naval Construction Force. Community members were encouraged to sit in the CESE driver’s seats, take photos, and talk with the Seabees.
“I’m so glad you all came out here,” said Mark Hall. “I’ve been to events like this as a kid, and I came today to let my kids check out all the different equipment, but I actually learned something too. I had no idea that the Navy did construction; I’ve always thought of it as just ships and aircraft.”
Many of the event’s attendees didn’t know that Seabees were based just 22 miles away at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme.
“I was surprised by how many people called us Soldier or Marine,” said Equipment Operator 2nd Class Alex Jackson, from Stuttgart, Arkansas. “Most of the people didn’t realize that we were in the Navy and they didn’t think the Navy had construction equipment.”
The battalion used the event as an opportunity to interact with the community and educate them on who the Seabees are and what they do.
“It’s always interesting to talk to people who don’t know what Seabees are because I get to be their first impression,” said Construction Electrician 3rd Class Kristopher Conklin, from Orlando, Florida. “It was really cool to explain to them that we deploy all over the world, and that some of our missions involve building schools, providing base construction and humanitarian missions.”
NMCB-3 is home-ported in Port Hueneme, California. Seabees are the expeditionary engineering and construction experts of the naval service. They provide task-tailored, adaptable and combat-ready engineering and construction forces that deploy to support global Navy objectives.
