FORT DRUM, N.Y. – Lt. Col. Jason W. Schultz assumed command of the 548th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade (LI), from the unit's outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Anthony L. Wilson Sr., during a change of command ceremony June 18, 2019, at Magrath Gym here.
For Schultz, the return to Fort Drum and the “Sword” Battalion is a familiar one, as he previously served as the executive officer and support operations officer for the 548th CSSB.
"It's good to back in the North Country, it's truly an honor and a privilege to serve with the finest sustainers in the Army," said Schultz.
"I'm thrilled to rejoin the Sword team," added Schultz, who comes to the unit after serving as an Advanced Strategic Planning and Policy Program Fellow at Brown University, where he is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science.
Schultz's arrival comes at a time where the unit's operational tempo is at its highest.
The 548th CSSB currently has two units, the 620th Movement Control Team and the 543rd Composite Supply Company, deployed in support of Operations Inherent Resolve and Atlantic Resolve respectively.
"Battalion command is a big deal, the Army takes a deliberate look at who they put in charge of these organizations," said Brig. Gen. Brett T. Funck, deputy commanding general for operations for the 10th Mountain Division (LI).
"Good units are guided and directed by strong leadership," said Funck.
"Clearly, you wouldn't have been in a position or coming into position unless those skills and attributes had not been present," said Funck.
Funck offered a few words of wisdom to the incoming commander of the 548th CSSB, "Enjoy your time because it goes really quick; four and half years ago, I was the guy standing out here doing a battalion change of command handing over the battalion I was in charge of."
You'll be amazed at how fast your time in command goes by, added Funck.
For Wilson, who assumed command of the battalion during its deployment to Kuwait in 2017, the non-stop pace is nothing new.
In the past 24 months, units from the 548th CSSB have supported hurricane relief efforts, the Division's home station training exercises, completed JRTC and NTC rotations, and stood up the 593rd Quartermaster Company, which was the second field-feeding company activated under Army Force Design Update.
"The 548th will continue to accomplish great things and sustain the 10th Mountain Division long after I'm gone, but I would like to tell the Soldiers, leaders, and families, one last time, thank you for your dedication and sacrifice," said Wilson, a Pensacola, Florida native.
"This is not a change in the mission but only a change in leadership, 548th will continue to support the climb under Lt. Col. Schultz's guidance," said Wilson.
