Airmen from the 131st Bomb Wing visited with their counterparts at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, as part of their annual tour, June 10-13.
The visit was part of an effort to build an inter-state partnership and share best practices between the two states. The trip also provided an opportunity for Airmen to develop networking relationships with members from other units, receive specialized training, build camaraderie and increase esprit de corps.
“This trip was important because it allowed us to meet and talk with our Colorado counterparts face-to-face,” said 1st Lt. Tara Healey, 131st Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics officer. “They often deal with a lot of the same issues that we do, and in-person interactions give us insight into those unique perspectives.”
The Missouri Guardsmen spent the week working side by side with Airmen assigned to the 460th Space Wing and the 140th Fighter Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard.
“Partnering with similar units allows us to learn from each other,” said Healey. “When that happens, we all benefit.”
Airman 1st Class Marc Tiernan, an air transportation specialist assigned to the 131st Bomb Wing recently graduated from basic military training and said he was able to use this time to receive training on air transportation core tasks and complete his initial on the job training requirements.
“For my first trip with the unit, I’ve been able to take advantage and learn as much as possible from other members within my career field,” said Tiernan. “I’m honored to be part of this team.”
Every year, members of the Air National Guard are required to attend regularly scheduled drills and complete two weeks of annual training.
“During our AT weeks, we take time to build relationships with other units, but more importantly, with members of our team,” said Healey. “Our LRS believes in building our Guard family. TDYs like this are great for many things like training and process improvement, but even better for building relationships.”
Healey added that getting to know your fellow Airmen takes more time than one weekend a month and two weeks in a year.
“Opportunities like these allow time for members to ask the hard questions, to form stronger bonds, and ultimately create an environment in which we all feel we belong, she said.”
