U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Audriana Williams stands in a field on Five Hills Training Area, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, June 16, 2019. Williams is a military police officer with 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion and is participating in Khaan Quest 2019 from June 14-28.
Williams is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who felt the need to challenge herself. In college, she felt dissatisfied and wanted to do more than sit in a classroom. Williams wanted to overcome all of her personal limits and conquer her fears. In the Marine Corps, she found the strength to do so.
Q&A:
Q: How do you like being in the Marine Corps?
A: “I love it! I just reenlisted a few months ago and I plan to be in for a while. I love the traveling, I love working with all kinds of people from different countries, and I love working with my Marines. There’s something about that comradery that you don’t want to let go of.”
Q: Why do you think Khaan Quest is important?
A “Khaan Quest is important because you get to work together with the world. You just don’t sit here with the people who speak the same language, eat the same food, and do the same things with you. You get to experience things that may be outside of your comfort zone. You get to communicate with all kinds of people from different countries. We get to build those relationships, which is important for us Marines, because we’re all over the place. Building that trust, confidence, and relationships with other countries helps everybody in the long run.”
Q: Why do you think it’s important for women to take part in peacekeeping operations?
A: “Everybody wants peace. Peace isn’t just for women, children, or men. It’s for everybody, so why shouldn’t everybody take part in doing that? Everyone’s role is important, so we shouldn’t just rely on one specific gender, race, nation, or anything to keep peace. Everybody wants it if it’s for your family, you wife, your husband, or whatever else the relationship may be. It should be everybody’s job and everybody needs to take part peacekeeping.”
Q: What kind of role do you think women would play during peacekeeping operations?
A: “Whatever they’re suited for. There is no one size fits all just because you’re a woman. If you’re qualified to do whatever role you think that’s necessary to keep peace, then you take that role. I wouldn’t want to just single out one thing and say that women must absolutely do this. That would be unfair. Whatever they see fit to do in whatever way they can help, then that’s what women should be doing.”
