U.S. Marines with 2nd Marine Logistics Group competed in the “Big 6” Softball Championship at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, June 10-12, 2019. The competition is the second of three command events held throughout the year.

The competition was a single-elimination tournament between the subordinate units of 2nd MLG. 2nd Maintenance Battalion and 8th Engineer Support Battalion ended the competition with a close game.

“It was a great game,” said Staff Sgt. Juliette Kemp, the operations chief for 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd MLG. “The game became tied 9-9 on the 7th inning… With bases loaded, a base hit brought in their third basemen giving 8th ESB the win of 11-10 at the bottom of the 9th inning.”

Marines from different companies came together to build teams. Most of them had never met before, yet worked as a team in the spirit of the game and esprit de corps. However, Marines often come together from different units to complete a mission.

“I couldn't be more proud of these guys,” said 1st Sgt. Joshua Pendley, first sergeant for Headquarters and Support Battalion, 8th ESB. “They immediately bonded through the love of the game and without question will have this experience etched into their memories for many years to come.”

Having a unit that works together to accomplish a common goal inside and outside the workplace is essential for the unit. It will improve Marines and Sailors resiliency and trust and confidence in those around them.

“Building a competitive spirit within a unit builds a winning unit that makes us proud to be part of it,” said Sgt. Maj. Steven Lunsford, sergeant major with 2nd MLG. “We are competitive by nature and winning is the result of the hard work Marines and Sailors put into their unit.”
