New Jersey Army National Guard Soldiers with the 154th Water Purification Company spent their annual training staged at Brindle Lake on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. During their stay, the conducted training with their water purification systems, honed basic soldiering skills, and qualified with weapons on the range.

Soldiers used a Tactical Water Purification Systems to pull brackish water from the lake, with the ability to filter 40,000 gallons an hour.

“If anything catastrophic were to happen, everyone is used to the bottle water, but there’s a possibility they couldn’t ship it to us,” said the commander of the 154th, Capt. Richard Lee. “The ability to be able to come to Brindle Lake and pull that brackish water to make it potable, that’s an asset that’s needed.”

Some of the Soldiers jumped at the chance to spend time outdoors mentoring their fellow Guardsmen.

“I think this training for these guys, since they don’t get to come out a lot and actually work on the equipment, I think it’s really helpful for them,” said Brooklyn native Sgt. Monthy Johnson, with the 820th Water Distribution Company. “It makes me a better Soldier leading them, showing them how to operate and troubleshoot [the equipment].”

Several Soldiers manned crew served weapons placed tactically around the camp, while others conducted water operations.

“We’re moving fast, and everyone is communicating,” said Spc. Elliot Medina, a Water Treatment Specialist standing guard at the camp entrance, who lives in Marlboro, N.J. “I feel like after this, we’re a lot more prepared for anything.”

For the commander, one of the highlights of the training was seeing his Soldiers coming together as a team.

“We have a lot of great young NCOs that we’ve empowered to take charge of this and train the young Soldiers and they’re really running with it and doing a great job,” said Lee.
