Approximately 170 artillery Soldiers from the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery redeployed from a four-day deployment training exercise at Camp Blanding, Fla., this past Sunday, April 19.
The troops conducted air movement Thursday, April 16, on three Air National Guard C-130 aircraft to Camp Blanding for a four-day drill weekend. The Soldiers, from Battery B in the Bronx, Headquarters Battery and Company G, 427th Support Battalion from Jamaica, conducted artillery crew live fire exercises to qualify individual Soldiers and gun crews for their combat support mission. The training provided Soldiers with leadership and confidence course training.
The artillery troops also practiced air assault raids with the M-102 cannon system and the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter.
The out-of-state training site provided an opportunity for Soldiers and junior leaders to conduct deployments on military aircraft and conduct training in new terrain.
The four-day drill weekend provided greater opportunity for the citizen Soldiers to conduct more complex, collective training away from their traditional state armories.
The military airlift was provided by the Texas Air National Guard's 136th Airlift Wing and New York's 107th Airlift Wing. The 107th Airlift Wing, based in Niagara Falls, N.Y., recently converted to the C-130 transport aircraft. The troop movement is a training mission for the Air National Guard aircrews.
