VICENZA, Italy – Capt. Michael F. Green, an exercise logistics planner for U.S. Army Africa, received the 2018 Active Component Transportation Corps Regimental Officer of the Year Award on May 7, 2019, in Fort Lee, VA.
In 2018, Green’s outstanding work as the USARAF G-4 exercise logistics planner and as commander of the 386th Transportation Detachment (Movement Control) under the 39th Transportation Battalion (MC) led to his recommendation and selection.
“During my command, my unit was awarded first place in the fiscal year 2018 U.S. Army Europe Deployment Excellence Award, second place in the fiscal 17 U.S. Army Europe DEA, and second place in the Fiscal 17 Headquarters, Department of the Army DEA,” Green said.
In March of 2018, while serving as commander of the 386th Transportation Detachment, Green’s unit supported Vanguard 360, a bi-lateral training exercise in Postojna, Slovenia. The exercise allowed Soldiers to train side-by-side with the Slovenian armed forces. The bi-lateral training included convoy live fire, base defense and explosive ordnance disposal.
The high-speed training Green’s Soldiers completed helped enhance the Army chief of staff’s strategic priority to develop a globally responsive Army by successfully integrating global partners.
Mike Balser, the USARAF Division G4 chief and Green’s supervisor, observed his hard work and nominated him for the award.
“(Captain) Green’s ability to run with the intent of the mission, communicate with all parties and succeed above expectations sets him above his peers,” Balser said. “He is able to run highly complex logistics support for Army exercises and has authored professional technical publications at the Department of the Army and regimental levels.”
“I am extremely honored to receive this award, but I would have not received it without my unit’s success,” Green said. “My 1st sergeant, noncommissioned officers, Soldiers, and lieutenants made this possible. I miss our time together and this award reminds me of the family I once had.”
Green acknowledges that his successes did not come easily and that they will leave a lasting effect on his Army career.
“The final four months of 2018 at USARAF G-4 was challenging, but a smooth transition, given the support and direction from the leadership, and my time in G-3 training was the most impactful and pivotal experience of my career,” he said. “I would not be where I am now without having gone through that rite of passage. I learned so much and will be forever in gratitude to my G-3 colleagues and mentors.”
Cpt. Green’s hard work and dedication was instilled in him as young man, growing up on the East Coast in a military family.
“My father is a retired U.S. Army major (and) Apache pilot and I lived the amazing life as an ‘Army brat’,” he said.
Green has some career advice for young Soldiers looking to follow in his path.
“Be comfortable being uncomfortable, and do things that scare you,” Green said. “It’s never easy putting your name and reputation on display for others to critique. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
