More than 30 Sailors from Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh participated in a Community Relations Project (COMREL) at North Park in Pittsburgh, Pa. June 7.

North Park is a 3,000-acre county park that features a 75-acre lake with fishing and kayaking, as well as several sporting facilities and a pool.

COMREL Participants came together from the local Pittsburgh area with gardening tools and gloves to perform landscaping and clean up efforts at the front entrance of the North Park swimming pool and on the playgrounds in the park. Their efforts included laying mulch in flowerbeds to revitalize the area and picking up brush.

The COMREL was coordinated as a part of NTAG Pittsburgh’s Sailor 360 program.

Chief Gunner's Mate Eric Wagner, from Versailles, Ohio serves as the program’s coordinator.

“We are all here in a location for three years, while everybody might not be from Pittsburgh this gives us an opportunity to be in the local community and make a difference,” Wagner said. “The Navy is here, we care and we are here to improve the quality of life around us as well.”

Rich Daniels, North Park Maintenance Supervisor, believes every helping hand matters.

“We can always use a volunteer group to make our parks look nice,” Daniels said. “Spreading mulch in the playground beds helps us out immensely. We like that in our parks and we appreciate the help we received today very much.”

Wagner feels the Sailor's efforts not only helps park goers enjoy the location more, but can also play a major role in the overall recruiting mission.

“In recruiting efforts, it’s big being seen out there and letting people know that the Navy is involved in the local community,” Wagner said. “This puts us out there doing some good for those we serve.”
