MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va.-- Recreational shooting is now available to service members, their dependents, and Department of Defense employees bi-weekly on Fridays at Weapons Training Battalion’s range one from noon to 2 p.m.
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Spencer Doll, the president of the Quantico Shooting Club, said this is a chance to blow off some end-of-week stress if anyone wants to come out with their firearms.
The smell of gunpowder and nature filled the air as people shot various weapons during a recreational fire event June 7, 2019.
“Shooting and marksmanship are perishable skills,” Doll explained. “In order to stay honed, they need to be practiced regularly so we continue to be masters in professional arms.”
According to Maj. Ben Reading, the operations officer for Weapons Training Battalion, the battalion and the club have a mutually-beneficial relationship to promote weapon use and knowledge among interested parties.
“It’s something we want to expand and make better,” said Reading. Maj. David Dreier, from Oceanside, California, was able to attend the recreational fire for his second time.
“It's an awesome opportunity to fire on range that has options,” said Dreier, a Marine Air-Ground Task Force intelligence officer and resident student of the Command and Staff College at Quantico. “This is the only range that I can shoot 450 yards.”
Reading urges eligible base residents to participate and that there are people, who will let you use their weapons if you don’t have your own.
“If you're trying improve your marksmanship scores for promotions, you should come out,” Reading continued. “This is a great opportunity to get more trigger time.”
Shooters may bring their own backing, targets, pasties, and staples or may purchase everything on site for a cost of $3. Additional targets may be purchased for $1 each. All personnel are required to bring their own hearing and eye protection.
The final event will be November 22, availability and weather permitting.
