The training consisted of tactics, hand-to-hand combat, and target practice.
Tactical training came first. Airmen went through practice scenarios such as moving from cover to cover in a battlefield, and responding to an active shooter situation. Before responding to a shooter, they performed brief but high intensity cardio exercises.
“It’s to get your heart rate up, because when shots are being fired, there’s going to be chaos, your adrenalin’s going, you start getting tunnel vision,” said Staff Sgt. Kyle Stevens, 117 SFS. “That’s to mimic what you’d encounter in real life responding to an active shooter.”
“Communication,” according to Stevens, is the most important part of an emergency response. “Coordinate with everybody and eliminate the threat as fast as possible.”
On the last day of training the defenders went to a shooting range. They practiced with the M240 machine gun, M249 light machine gun, M203 grenade launcher, shotgun, and the M84 flashbang “stun” grenade.
Traveling to Eglin for this training mission gave the Security Forces access to facilities and equipment similar to what they may use on future deployments. It also allowed them to focus on learning and preparing for unfamiliar scenarios.
