A positive attitude and focus on the future is a local Soldier’s key to success.

Sgt. Christopher Utter was named Tobyhanna Army Depot’s Warfighter of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2019 during a ceremony at the Pocono Raceway NASCAR event on June 2. He leads a fire team assigned to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s Company C, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment.

The 10-year Army veteran excels at providing purpose, direction and motivation for the Soldiers assigned to his team, according to Staff Sgt. Eric Bussman, unit training noncommissioned officer in charge (NCOIC). Bussman describes Utter as a role model and someone who never backs down from a challenge.
“Sergeant Utter is the first to raise his hand when a task needs to be completed,” Bussman said. “To hone his skills, he volunteers for training and always answers the president’s or governor’s call during an emergency.”

As an infantry team leader, Utter is accountable for the Soldiers and equipment assigned to the team. A deployment to Kuwait gave him an opportunity to test those skills in a real-world environment. He considers helping Soldiers gain confidence in their skills as one of his “greatest achievements.”

“It’s my job to make sure everyone is physically and mentally healthy,” Utter said, explaining that he’s also in charge of training. “The Soldiers need to know how to perform day-to-day tasks, and uphold military customs and courtesies.”

Throughout his career, Utter would surround himself with people who could teach him how to be a better Soldier and leader.

“I paid extra attention to details and learned as much as I could,” Utter said. “Now I’m able to share those insights with junior Soldiers to bolster their careers.”
