Soldiers from six different countries across Europe and the United States combine forces in Romania to participate in Saber Guardian 19. The countries are working together across three European nations to increase interoperability with allies while building and sustaining unit readiness.
The opening ceremony in Cincu, Romania was held today to kick off the exercise in this region of the country.
“Saber Guardian is important because it allows us to improve our interoperability and develop relationships that are going to benefit us in the future,” said Maj. Gen. Joe Jarrard, U.S. Army Europe Deputy Commanding General for the Army National Guard.
U.S. Army Europe is working with the Romanian Land Forces to increase communication and understanding with our NATO allies and partners.
Saber Guardian was first conducted in Romania in 2013 and was an annual event rotating between Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine until 2017 when the exercise became biannual. Despite many changes throughout the years, Saber Guardian’s main focus has been to develop interoperability among the participating nations’ militaries while strengthening regional security cooperation.
Thousands of Soldiers from across six individual countries are living and training alongside each other to foster and maintain relationships that are essential for ensuring global security.
“It has been a grand experience working with the other countries and experiencing their lifestyles and their culture,” said Spc. Jesse Garza, a U.S. Army Reserve Soldier with the 519th Transportation Detachment, who volunteered to be a color guard for the Cincu Opening Ceremony. “It’s an awakening to be invited to this country”
The United States' posture and relationships throughout Europe is critical to ensure that we can quickly support the U.S. European Command and NATO efforts with flexibility and agility in order to address conventional and asymmetric threats wherever and whenever they materialize.
This year’s iteration of Saber Guardian is co-led by Romanian Land Forces and U.S. Army Europe to enhance joint and combined interoperability across a variety of mission sets between Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, the U.S., NATO allies and Partnership for Peace nations.
“We continue to get better each time we do these types of exercises,” said Jarrard, “they’re all about the interoperability between our allies and border nations”.
