The 100th Air Refueling Wing hosted its first-ever Highland Games at RAF Mildenhall, England, May 23, 2019.
This event served three purposes: to give Col. Christopher Amrhein, 100th ARW commander, a spirited sendoff, to start an annual Highland Games traditon and to give 100th ARW Airmen the chance to get out of the shop and compete in the sun.
The games here consisted of five events: stone throw, caber toss, hammer throw, 400-meter relay race and jerry can relay.
“The contests were chosen from a list of typical Highland Games events, we tried to keep games traditional with a bit of military flair thrown in,” said Master Sgt. Alicia Goetschel 100th Security Forces Squadron NCO-in-charge of security forces operations. “We wanted to stay true to the heritage of the Highland Games and at the same time throw in a little healthy competiton.”
The Highland Games are traditionally held during the spring and summer months to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture while building comaraderie.
“It was great to come out and enjoy the weather and comraderie,” said 1st Lt. Rickey Sizemore 100th SFS flight commander. “The event turned out awesome and we had excellent participation from multiple squadrons.”
This event was more than just the inaugural Highland Games at RAF Mildenhall.
“This was a culmination of Colonel Amrhein’s time here at RAF Mildenhall,” Goetschel said. “We wanted to do something different and make this a unique experience, and that’s always best when everyone can get together.”
It took planning and hard work from many people to put this event together.
“As the project officer I wanted to do more than just a picnic, the Highland Games aspect added some entertainment into the event,” said Senior Master Sgt. Louis Phillips, 100th SFS first sergeant. “Additionally, it was the team that made this event possible, everyone came together to help make sure it was a success.”
