AUGUSTA, Mich-- The police sirens ring on the road as they catch the speeding car in front of them. Common sights such as these can also be occasionally found on military installations. Police are everywhere, and the Michigan Army National Guard, 1st Battalion, 177th Regiment Regional Training Institute is there to train soldiers to be police officers.
Twice a year, the Army National Guard military police qualification course exclusively accepts Army Guard and Reserve members from across the country. Graduating soldiers transitioning from a previous military occupational specialty to military police. Roughly 50 to 60 soldiers join the course every year.
"Military police are the first line of defense in protecting soldiers and their families on military installations," said Sgt. 1st Class Paul Corrie, senior instructor for the 1st Battalion, 177th Regiment RTI.
Military police across the nation are tasked with similar duties to civilian police forces, but perform additional tasks exclusive to the military, such as training police forces in foreign nations and pulling security in combat zones. In 28 days, soldiers are trained in the multi-purpose law enforcement occupation.
At any time, the students are encouraged to discuss their personal experiences and opinions of the police force. It is a priority of the class to review controversial topics involving police forces across the country. This allows the students to identify best practices and initiate change that come with being a police officer.
"Students are engaged and motivated and generate a lot of good discussion," said Corrie.
With proper training in ethics, combat and policy, the military police of the Army Reserves and National Guard continue to keep the people on all military installations safe every day.
