FORT CARSON, Colo. – Family, friends and colleagues gathered for the retirement ceremony for Col. Frank G. Davis II, the former commander of the 71st Explosive Ordinance Group (Explosive Ordinance Disposal), at Founders Plaza at Fort Carson May 17.
The event marked the official conclusion to an Army career that spanned 28 years of service.
“Frank has, throughout his career, worked tirelessly to ensure EOD Soldiers were trained and ready to accomplish the mission,” Brig. Gen. William L. Thigpen, the acting senior commander of the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, said. “He lived by the mantra, ‘if you take care of people, they will definitely take care of the mission.’”
When addressing how his Family helped him to get through tough times during his years in the military, Davis reflected on his own upbringing as a military child, stating certain qualities are prevalent in military Families.
“My life-long experience has been one of tolerance, acceptance, resiliency and diversity, and it helped to shape my leadership style and how I feel about people,” Davis said.
During the ceremony, Davis also touched on his transition from Field Artillery to the Ordinance Corps in 1995, which he described as a life-changing experience.
“Now I can honestly say I really didn’t fully understand what I was getting into,” Davis explained. “An extremely technically-dangerous occupation where they taught you how to build and render safe conventional and improvised explosives and nuclear devices at a schoolhouse with an attrition rate of nearly 70 percent at that time.”
Thigpen praised Davis’ leadership throughout his long career in the Army, and his willingness to lead and mentor Soldiers.
“Frank is the type of teammate who will give you the shirt off his back in order to make you successful,” Thigpen stated.
Brig. Gen. Thigpen during the ceremony also took a moment to express his appreciation to Col. Davis’ wife, Priscilla and their three daughters for their dedication to Frank Davis and the Army mission over the years.
“What a testament to a great Army Family,” Thigpen said.
In his closing remarks, Frank Davis thanked the Soldiers he had commanded in attendance, and challenged them to accomplish great things going forward.
“I want you all to dream big, and most of all believe in yourselves,” Davis said. “You can really achieve anything your heart desires. I am an example of that.”
