BAY OF CADIZ — The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) completed a two day series of maritime training exercises with Spanish maritime counterparts off the coast of southwestern Spain on May 25, 2019.

Ross began a series of exercises with Spanish Navy Santa Maria-class frigate ESPS Reina Sofia (F 84), homeported alongside Ross at Naval Station Rota, on April 24th, 2019. Exercises included dynamic maneuvering in formation, tactical communications, maritime interdiction operations, search and evasion exercises, and flight operations with a Spanish Navy Sikorsky SH-60B Sea Hawk helicopter.

The U.S. Navy routinely practices high-end warfare with allies and partners. Multinational training improves combined capabilities and operational effectiveness, thereby enhancing regional maritime stability, combined readiness and naval capability with NATO allies and partners.

“The Spanish have always and continue to maintain a naval force that operates with the utmost professionalism and expertise” said Cmdr. Dave Coles, commanding officer of USS Ross, “Team Ross really enjoyed the opportunity to get first class training with the highly proficient Reina Sofia crew. We look forward to operating in tandem with our Rota neighbors again soon.”

Ross, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is on its 8th forward-deployed naval forces patrol conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
