Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) held their 2nd Annual Quality Symposium on May 17 hosting lectures, workshops and numerous project presentations from many commands on the east coast.
The symposium featured dynamic speakers who addressed the past, present and future of the quality in Military Medicine; dozens of poster and podium presentations of process improvement projects implemented by residents and staff at military treatment facilities throughout Navy Medicine East; and a dynamic workshop that provided hands-on cases highlighting the importance of patient safety and quality care.
The lectures that kicked-off the Quality Symposium were titled What Counts in Coordinating Care for the Complex Patient, and Driving Healthcare Excellence through Innovation and Collaboration.
“Over the course of the day, we heard outside speakers in multiple ways tell us we’re very good,” said Capt. Christopher Culp, NMCP’s commanding officer. “Validation from somebody who’s been one of us and is running a quality program at a university elsewhere is meaningful. Validation from a patient is very meaningful. Validation from a former CMO and is now at the next higher level in our chain of command is very meaningful. The reason we are so good is because of all of you. ”
Following World War II, the Navy joined The Joint Commission to be accredited across the board, not just in surgery, and in the 1970s, increased data and modern quality measures began to be instilled in Graduate Medical Programs. From there, outcome management and total quality management techniques were developed.
“The reason we are good is because of all of you,” Culp said. “We’ve been doing this all along, we just haven’t stopped and collected it all in a day to sit and reflect on it. We are going to keep doing that; it’s part of the institutionalization of quality, safety, experience and readiness, which just makes us better going forward.”
NMCP’s Healthcare Simulation Bio Skills Training Center hosted hands-on training simulations for those attending the symposium called the Hospital Escape Room workshop.
“The simulation lab is a safe environment to come in and actually do an assessment on a patient, identify issues or treatments that may be incorrect, with a goal of patient safety,” said David McCarthy, an NMCP Quality Management staff member. “This gets folks to come together and network, it gets folks to come and see the most current issues that are out there and some of the process improvements. They can share innovations and bring those innovations back to their commands.”
At the conclusion of the symposium, awards were given for six categories for podium presentation – Patient Safety, Quality of Care, Experience of Care, Readiness/Communication, Training/Education, and Trainee; while the top three poster presentations received a first, second and third place overall.
