FORT BELVOIR, Va. — Defense Threat Reduction Agency employee Kevin M. Mueller was presented the 2019 Department of Defense (DoD) National Capital Region (NCR) Spirit of Service Recognition Award during National Public Service Week Thursday, May 9 in the Pentagon Auditorium.

Mueller was selected as a recipient of the award for his commitment to public service as a Program Manager of the Device Characterization for Forensics program and Contracting Officer’s Representative for DTRA’s Research and Development Directorate, Nuclear Technologies Department, Nuclear Forensics Division from January 2017 to February 2019.

According to the citation, within months of entering Federal service in 2017, Mueller exceled in developing new, combat support-focused budgets to more responsively address Combatant Command (CCMD) requirements. Mueller meticulously coordinated program resources, which included more than $10 million in funding annually, among competing priorities, performers and capabilities, enabling his refocused program to better adapt to new challenges. In just a few week, his refocused program was able to provide several short-notice solutions to CCMD requests for information on real-world nuclear threats and potentially hostile scenarios.

While his commitment to his work and the Agency is invaluable, Mueller has also dedicated a significant amount of his time being a board member or active member in several non-profit organizations dedicated to child literacy, helping those in need and supporting animal rescue efforts.

“It is because of people like the dedicated public servants that we’re here to recognize today, who never lose sight of our mission, that we remain on the path to success,” said guest speaker Sajeel Ahmed, Acting Director of Administration, Office of the Chief Management Officer. “Their daily efforts keep our government functioning and help make our national exceptional,” he said.

The Spirit of Service Award recognizes national capital region, DoD, and service branch personnel for their outstanding performance during their previous year of service.
