Security Assistance Command recognizes financial specialist

The Security Assistance Command has recognized Sheyla Ware as its Employee of the Quarter for the first quarter, fiscal year 2019.

She distinguished herself by her outstanding performance of duties as a financial specialist.

Ware is the team lead for the European Command/Africa Command region. Her team conducts financial review of basic letter of acceptance submissions, amendments and modifications.

According to Martha “Ann” Holden, chief of the Case Management Branch, G8, who nominated Ware for the recognition, her dedication and professionalism play a key role in ensuring her EUCOM/AFRICOM team member’s training and development needs are met, thus ensuring USASAC Redstone’s delivery billing line closure actions are completed accurately and within specified timeframes.

Ware’s exceptional leadership demonstrates her commitment to the mission of USASAC, Holden said.

“She consistently maintains a high work ethic, even in the midst of staff shortages and absences due to training requirements and deployments,” Holden wrote in the nomination.

“Ms. Ware is doing a remarkable job as a leader, managing and tasking her team’s workload,” Holden said. “Doing so enabled her team to close 494 of 1,199 – 41% – of total line closures processed through second quarter of 2019.”

Ware joined the USASAC workforce 10 years ago. Prior to joining USASAC, she worked in St. Louis, Missouri, for the Department of Defense and moved to Huntsville as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. Altogether, Ware has 31 years of government service.
She was born in Senatobia, Mississippi, but had lived in East St. Louis since she was 6 years old. She graduated from East St. Louis Senior High School in 1979. She received a four-year scholarship for track and field at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. When she left Lincoln University, she returned to East St. Louis to pursue her life and ambitions, she said.

“I started working with the government in 1983 as a summer hire because I was attending college,” Ware said. “I worked with them during the summers of 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. I became a permanent employee Sept. 30, 1988.”

After becoming a permanent employee, Ware said she went back to college and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She holds a bachelor’s in business administration from Concordia University in St. Louis and a master’s in business administration from Lindenwood University, also in St. Louis.

“I did all of this while coaching the girls’ track team at East St. Louis Senior High School (her alma mater) and also while serving as a trustee on the Cahokia Illinois Board while working for the government,” Ware said.

“I enjoy girl’s track and field, and I wanted to help the people in Cahokia,” she said. “I ran for Village Trustee number 2 won. I worked closely with the mayor of Cahokia, Frank Bergman.”

While she enjoys her job with USASAC, she said she is still trying to find her passions in Huntsville.

“I find myself watching TV a lot on the weekend,” Ware said. “I would like to start going to monthly meetings in Madison, Alabama, to see what is going on and get involved to see how I can help with the experience I gained as trustee number 2 in Cahokia.”

She said she lives by the motto, “Please don’t get stressed out or let anyone stress you out because this is a stepping stone. Life is a one-time offer; use it well.”
