Soldiers from 1-3 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion (Task Force Viper), 12th Combat Aviation Brigade execute a Fat Cow training exercise in Hohenfels, Germany on May 2, 2019 aiming to provide versatile refueling for the unit’s AH-64D Apaches.
The CH-47 Chinook uses a portable refueling system called a Fat Cow. The exercise also included the loading of dummy Hellfire Missiles as part of the real life simulation.
The CH-47 Chinooks allow the adaptability needed to place a forward arming and refueling point anywhere they can land. This allows the task force to extend the range of operations by providing a fuel stop without the use of ground vehicles.
In a tactical environment the Fat Cow can allow all of Task Force Viper’s Apaches to be refueled in under one hour from landing.
This training was part of a much larger exercise, Viper Vanguard, where the aviation assets were used to conduct deliberate attack mission exercises. This exercise furthers Task Force Viper’s adaptability and combat effectiveness.
