The U.S. Air Force welcomed a new general officer to its ranks, as Vaughn, Montana native Col. Ty Neuman, director of the Commander’s Action Group (CAG) for U.S. Strategic Command, promoted to the rank of brigadier general, May 3, 2019.
“I contribute a lot of my success to my parents,” said Neuman. “Their parenting and leadership provided me a great foundation to build upon as a young man.”
Following his promotion, Neuman will become the principal assistant deputy administrator for military application in Washington, D.C. He will serve as a liaison between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration to ensure the DoD’s best interests are properly conveyed when working purchases for various components within the military.
“My job is to bridge the gap between the DoD and the Department of Energy and be the voice for the military,” Neuman explained. “My goal is to ensure our nuclear deterrent program is viable in the future and make sure our best interests are being advocated appropriately.”
Since June 2018, Neuman has led an eight-member team directly supporting the commander and staff of USSTRATCOM. The team assists in the development and implementation of the commander’s strategic engagement, strategy, vision and intent. In addition, the CAG provides executive support for all domestic and international travel to USSTRATCOM.
“Through this position, I’ve had an opportunity to see how a four-star general is able to make significant change happen in one of the most powerful commands in the world,” said Neuman. “Gen. John Hyten, commander of USSTRATCOM, has provided me great mentorship from a four-star level. I hope to take those experiences to the Department of Energy to carry on those leadership abilities.”
Prior to arriving at USSTRATCOM, Neuman served as commander of the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, where he was responsible for maintaining combat-ready B-52H Stratofortress aircraft, crews and associated combat support to conduct operations across the globe.
He also served as vice commander for the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, and squadron commander for the 28th Bomb Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.
As a child in Montana, Neuman was introduced to the Air Force by his father, who served in the Montana Air National Guard. This introduction provided him the opportunity to see what the Air Force was about and further fueled his interest in aviation.
“Seeing F-106s and eventually F-16s flying over my head as a young child helped spur my interest in the aviation career field,” Neuman explained. “Shortly after I started college, Operation Desert Storm kicked off and that was the catalyst which propelled me into the Air Force.”
Neuman earned his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Colorado State University and immediately entered specialized undergraduate navigator training where he received distinguished graduate in 1997.
Following initial flight training, Neuman transitioned to the B-1 Lancer, also known as the Bone, where he began his operational flying career. During his time in the B-1 he graduated with honors from the U.S. Weapons School, flew combat missions, and commanded at the squadron and vice wing command level.
Throughout his career, Neuman logged more than 3,188 hours in the B-1B, B-52H, E-4B, T-43, T-37, and T-39, which includes 301 combat hours in support of Operations Allied Force, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Aerial Achievement Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and an Air Force Commendation medal with two oak leaf clusters.
Neuman stated that he will always cherish growing up in Montana and the mentorship and life experiences his parents provided him.
“Even today, I lean on my parents for advice and information,” Neuman said. “I feel very fortunate to have such a great family that supports me in everything I do.”
USSTRATCOM has global responsibilities assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, nuclear operations, space operations, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, global strike, missile defense, and analysis and targeting.
